Small Realities was a special project created by MAD in conjunction with the exhibition Otherworldly: Optical Delusions and Small Realities. Here, you can learn more about pieces featured in the exhibition and see works of other artists who construct models and dioramas.
Otherworldly: Optical Delusions and Small Realities featured contemporary work by 37 preeminent visual artists who have generated renewed interest in the venerable art form of the diorama. The exhibition illuminated the phenomenal renaissance of interest among artists worldwide in constructing small-scale hand built depictions of artificial environments and alternative realities, either as sculpture or as subjects for photography and video. They are worlds of “magic realism” conceived and realized through intense engagement with materials, attention to detail, and concern for meaningful content. In the exhibition, the works were presented as dioramas, models, snow globes, and site specific installations, as well as through photographs and video.
